on it because come midnight monday if lawmakers have not found the fiscal cliff solution you're going to hear a whole heck of a lot of noise. let's get straight to washington. nbc's kristen welker at the white house and luke russert is tracking developments at capitol hill and nbc news senior political editor mark murray is here to break it down for us from the washington bureau. we will start with kristen. last we heard, kristen welker, the president came out to report that he is modestly optimistic. has the rhetoric changed at all today? >> reporter: it has changed a little bit. the president is still modestly optimistic, but i just spoke with a democratic source who tells me at this hour a deal is looking doubtful. of course, we want to underscore the fact that these negotiations are very fluid so that characterization could change at any moment, but it seems as though the discussions going on behind the scenes right now have yet to bear fruit and right now we do have the focus on the senate. majority leader reid and mitch mcconnell trying to hammer out a deal that would, to some extent ex

is the house republican conference now in their mentality on making a deal on the fiscal cliff, and is there reason for optimism if something does get produced from the senate sometime today? >> you know, i think there is reason for optimism, first of all, because, chris, you have to remember, we actually passed as part of our budget in the spring an alternative to this possess. we did another such bill in august, and then before we left prayer to plan b, we passed a third bill, so we're glad to see the senate move, and when they do, we'll have something to sink our teeth into. we might not necessarily accept it as-is. there will be some amending, i suppose, lots of debate, but i think that the house is ready to act. the difference between a senate proposal now and plan b last week is that this time we will not need to pass it only on republican votes. we'll have democrats who will be moving forward, and so i think you'll get a vote. >> let me follow-up on that, because i think it's an important point. john boehner's speakership took a hit. you can debate how big or how small.

that they are getting something done, the fiscal cliff meeting at the white house right now. what were the mechanics of rushing the deal through congress and getting it passed into law? what would that look like in four days? lisa desjardins joins us now. what will it look like? >> well, there is a couple of possibilities, don. one is that they take sort of the remnants of one of the bills that passed the house or the senate and they just change it. they add whatever is in this deal to it. they have a whole bunch of vehicles that are possible for that. one sticking point, because this deal would most likely deal with taxes, there is a rule in the constitution that is has been interpreted by most every side to determine it has to begin in the house, revenue measures begin in the house. they need a bill that starts in the house, okay, they have a lot to do that. then the trick is making sure they have the votes. i think if we see anything come out of tonight's meeting, anything substantial, that's what is going to happen this next day and a half. leaders on both sides have to make sure they have got t
